Abstract: In previous research on product design methodology, the models for the product conceptual design process were usually based on engineering design without considering human needs, aesthetics or culture. In this paper, we studied the theory of product semantics from the viewpoint of engineering and proposed a new product conceptual design process model that integrates semantics. This study expanded the research field of product semantics from culture to engineering and corrected the drawbacks of the engineering design methodology that neglects aesthetics and culture and does not use humans as a measure. We also built a computer-aided design system based on the CFBSS (Customer-Function-Behavior-Structure-Semantics) model. To test the validity of the model and system, both a quantitative evaluation, in which we used the criteria of product creation design, and a usability test for the computer-aided design system were conducted. The experimental study showed that the CFBSS model provided effective support for the product conceptual design stage, and that the assessment scores, which were determined using the factors of technology, economy, aesthetics, and ergonomics, were greatly improved for the design cases that used the CFBSS model.
